I love ending the night of pumpkin carving on the phone with poison control. They really are such nice folks and so calming. So why do I spend so much time on the phone with these kind people working the hotline? Her name is Audrey, and she's two and a half.
Who would have thought a child would want to eat the cake of Cascade that has been stuck in our dishwasher for the last few days? I guess the people at Poison control would suspect as much, since they said it is very common. The good news is that it burns your lips so you can't eat much of it, and it doesn't kill a two year old either, another good thing. The box of Cascade had me thinking it was another trip to the emergency room for little Audrey, but not this time. All it took was a glass of milk, water on her lips, and off the bed on her tummy (in the event that she vomits, she won't choke)

I was on the phone with them a few nights earlier for the same reason. 2 1/2 year old Edward wanted to smell the dishwashing detergent and seemed to get some in his mouth. The box said to call poison control if any was swallowed and I wasn't sure, so of course I wasn't going to take a chance. He complied with drinking a bunch of water and wasn't phased one bit by it all. The poison control people were incredibly friendly and helpful (is this a government service?? No, I have found. It's a not for profit agency and their website is http://www.1-800-222-1222.info/AAPCC/home.asp). I was very relieved not to have to go to the emergency room.
Odd isn't it? Who would have thought that soap would look good to a two year old child? I also received a follow up call the next night from poison control, checking to make sure everything was fine. They are so thoughtful.
Thanks for your comments. Do you happen to have a suggestion for a safe alternative to the harsh chemicals used in a dishwasher? Or for that matter, could you share soome of your safe cleaning secrets?
